A pioneering project for sustainable food production in a changing climate
CROP4CLIMA’s launch draws attention from institutions and groups on synthetic biology, agriculture, and seed oil production.
The CROP4CLIMA project is set to bring innovative solutions to two critical facets of modern agriculture – crop resilience and environmental sustainability. Backed by a substantial Horizon Europe grant of €2.5 million and a planned duration of 32 months, the project focuses on developing oil crops, mainly rapeseed, that can better withstand arid conditions and sequester more carbon dioxide to help mitigate the impacts of large-scale farming on the climate crisis.
Innovating beyond past breakthroughs
Building upon the FutureAgriculture Consortium’s proof-of-concept success in 2021, CROP4CLIMA will leverage an innovative metabolic pathway optimisation that recaptures released CO₂ via photorespiration. The novel pathway will also enable plants to use cellular resources better, saving fertiliser and water without affecting yield or quality.
